Blackjack Rules Explanation for Beginners & Tips

1.The Basics

• In a standard game of blackjack, a deck typically consists of 6-8 decks of poker cards, with joker cards excluded. The dealer will prompt players to place their bets before dealing two cards to each player, as well as to themselves.
• While the player’s cards are face up, one of the dealer’s cards remains face down. The objective of the game is simple: get as close to 21 points as possible without exceeding it.

2.Card Values

• In blackjack, the cards are valued based on their face value, with J, Q, and K all worth 10 points. Aces, on the other hand, can be counted as either 1 or 11 points, depending on the player’s hand.

3.Gameplay

Once the initial cards are dealt, players have several options to consider:

• Hit
  If players wish to receive additional cards, they can choose to “hit.” This decision is typically made based on the player’s current point total. In blackjack, players indicate their desire to hit by tapping the table twice.
• Stand
  When a player’s point total exceeds 12, receiving another face card would result in a “bust.” In such cases, players may choose to “stand,” indicating that they do not want any more cards. 
• Split
  If a player is initially dealt a pair, they have the option to “split” their hand into two separate hands. However, the player must place an additional bet equal to their initial wager. 
• Double
  Doubling down allows players to double their original bet if their initial hand totals 8, 9, 10, or 11. Winning a double bet results in a higher payout from the house. 
• Surrender
  In blackjack, players have the option to “surrender” if they believe their initial two cards will not outperform the dealer’s hand. Surrendering allows players to retrieve half of their wager, while the other half is claimed by the house. 
• Insurance
  When the dealer’s face-up card is an Ace, players can purchase insurance by paying half of their original bet. This is done to protect against the possibility of the dealer having a blackjack.
